From #RamadanPlasticFasting to GreenIftar
Growing means having the courage to change
Spurred by a small action against the excessive consumption of plastic during Ramadan, it became a big campaign in 2021. Today, this global movement not only stands for a plastic-free fast, but for a sustainable fast-breaking #GreenIftar overall – with sustainable food, economical water usage, fair consumption, regional economic activity and much more. This growth brought about big changes: #RamadanPlasticFasting has quickly become GreenIftar and has taken a big step towards internalisation.
The birth of this campaign happened five years ago. In 2017, two students at NourEnergy started with an innovative idea to master Ramadan without plastic consumption as much as possible: Action #RamadanPlasticFasting. This action was very well received in the Muslim community. Since then, more and more communities, Muslim university groups and circles of friends have been organising sustainable fast-breaking events.
A lot has happened in the past five years. For better implementation of sustainable fast-breaking, nine GIGs (GreenIftar-Goals) have been defined, which have taken their place in the GreenIftar-Guide. You can download this guide for free and share it with your friends and family. Not only will you find the nine GreenIftar-Goals in our GreenIftar-Guide, you will also find numerous tips and ideas, as well as a checklist for an easier implementation of a GreenIftar. The checklist can be used by individuals at home as well as clubs, mosques and other organisations!
This year, we are expanding our campaign and using our new video as a mouthpiece for further media attention, attention that will make our world a better place and highlight and protect the beauty of our planet in the best possible way, insha’Allah.

Campaign successes so far
In addition to creating awareness for topics such as the environment, sustainability and conscious consumption, all GreenIftar participants can look back with pride on the achievements they have made so far.
30 DAYS - RAMADAN
- Through the use of our campaign, we have been instrumental in voicing out against plastic consumption, so much so that this concern has been brought to the forefront in society and political discussions. It has been a catalyst for change, as the EU parliament has approved a new law banning single-use plastic items.
- Directly fulfilling Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 11, 12, 13, 14, 17 and indirectly promoting the implementation of SDGs 2,3 and 4
- Bringing together thousands of people striving side by side for a more just world and for the protection of the environment
- Steady increase in number of participants for five consecutive years
