How to implement a GreenIftar

To inspire you, we have summarised the most important points to consider when planning and carrying out a GreenIftar. A brief summary of the individual steps can be found below. A detailed description can be found in the GreenIftar Guide.

1. THE INVITATION: WHO AND HOW MANY?

If possible, draw up a guest list and ask your guests to RSVP to the invite by a certain date. Perhaps you already know the average number of guests based on previous years. This will enable you to prepare your shopping list accordingly.

Yes! Let others know that you are doing something for the sake of Allah and simultaneously motivate them to do the same!

2. PLANNING: WHAT AM I PROVIDING AND WHAT MUST I KEEP IN MIND?

A well thought-out menu gives insight into the sustainable aspects that need to be considered in its preparation.

What crockery is needed? And is there enough of it – for the leftovers too? Consider sustainable alternatives and avoid disposable tableware.

3. SHOPPING: WHAT DO I BUY AND HOW DO I BRING IT HOME?

It is best to determine the number of ingredients required for one portion and then multiply this by the number of guests expected to attend.

Make an effort – if budget permits – to buy package-free items as much as possible, as the packaging usually ends up in the waste after a single use.

Good alternatives to using the car are to cycle or take public transport. And if the supermarket is close-by, you could make use of this advantage by taking a walk to the supermarket.

4. WHAT DECORATION DO I USE?

Instead of balloons, garlands or tea lights that end up in the trash after the event, you can use dried flowers, leaves or other decorations that can be reused.

Depending on the time of year in which Ramadan falls, you may be able to use leaves, pumpkins, apples or other fruits and vegetables as decorative elements. As a rule of thumb, the decoration should either be processed?/recycled or composted afterwards.

5. IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SUSTAINABLE BREAKING OF THE FAST

Kill two birds with one stone: make use of extra pairs of hands when distributing tasks; this will also allow you to spend time in the community.

Use the opportunity of your GreenIftar gathering to inspire action with a presentation about sustainability

Sustainability also applies to spirituality: determine a suitable place for the sunset prayer and take into account any time delays.

Although ideally there should be no leftovers, make sure that your guests bring lunch boxes with them so they can take any leftovers home.
