GreenIftar is a campaign advocating:
Sustainability
Muslims are encouraged to implement sustainable ways of breaking their fast so that the beauty of our nature is preserved for our future generations – without piles of garbage accumulating on the mainland and animals suffering in the sea.
Spirituality
GreenIftar invites people to look into the mirror: to reflect upon their consumption patterns and to ponder over and take responsibility for their actions, as well as to internalize the Islamic principles of sustainability and understand that environmental protection is a form of worship.
Community
Through GreenIftar, a community of high principles and values is formed, in which Muslims inspire and motivate one another and work together to tackle the biggest social challenge of sustainable development to date.
Education
The educational aspect of the campaign consists of creating a body of knowledge and providing conceptual support for organizations in the implementation of objectives concerning the issue of sustainable development, which pertain to the Islamic core elements, namely: Tawhid (unity), Amanah (trust), Khalifah (steward), Mizan (balance) and Adl (justice).
Peace
With mindful and sustainable GreenIftars, man makes peace with himself, society, the environment and thus the whole of creation.

why GreenIftar?
Your Iftar....A part of the solution or the problem?
Ramadan is also a month that focuses on community. After the sun sets, Muslims break their fast and often gather with family, friends, or their community to do so.
Depending on the number of guests, disposable dishes and cutlery made of Styrofoam or plastic are commonly used. Drinks come from aluminum cans, PET bottles or disposable cups. In addition to this waste, often too much cooking has been done; after all, if you shop and cook while hungry, miscalculations are made. Sadly, this unwanted food is often thrown away and thus excessive food waste becomes an additional problem.
Within 30 days, Iftars in 2750 mosques produce about 480 million kg of plastic waste, which is about 3.5% of Germany’s annual waste. So Muslims produce more plastic waste in Ramadan than in any other month of the year! But how long does it take, for example, for a plastic bottle to completely decompose in the environment? Up to 450 years! In addition, there are about 8.25 million iftar dishes, which are often prepared with food from unsustainable cultivation, as well as a lot of packaging material and long transport routes, consequently harming our environment.
How can all this environmental pollution and food wastage possibly be in line with spiritual reflection, self-improvement, and heightened devotion and worship during Ramadan? How can we host iftars that cause more harm than good for Allah’s creation?
This Ramadan, let us make sustainable and effective fast-breaking choices that are in line with Islamic ethics. As mindful Muslims, we strive for the best, the best for ourselves, for society and for our environment.
With GreenIftar, plastic waste becomes a thing of the past and we can leave a positive footprint for 450 years!
- No mountains of garbage on the mainland!
- No suffering for marine animals!
- No pollution of the oceans!
